Inspired as a young boy by the Constables and Turners in the National Gallery, Adrian Parnell went on to study at St Martins and the Slade during the seventies. For the past thirty years he has produced paintings and drawings that are the fruit of a continuing visual encounter with specifically chosen areas of Cornwall, Devon and now Sussex.
Each painting underpinned by exacting draughtsmanship, eschewing easy approximations is the result of both is both systematic and spontaneous observation completed over many months; sometimes years, the final assemblage of parts is a fusing together of weather, time and lighting conditions. Paint is applied and removed in layers not dissimilar to the geological processes which are also taken into account echoing the fact that painting is simultaneously an event and a record of events.

In an age where our landscapes come fast, glossy, and filtered through photoshop, the pared down paintings of Adrian Parnell are the harvest of a patient eye, enlivened by the pulse of an individual interpretation.
