Colin Booth is interested in working with ideas and materials. He likes to contrast the hand-made with the machine-made responding to the idea of imperfection and change. A common theme in his work is the relationship between the intimacy of surface and monumentality of structure which embraces his painting, sculpture and installation and brings into play the physical space of the gallery. Over the past two or three years Booth's work has moved off the walls and onto the floor.
As a painter Booth continues to work with the surface qualities of colour, texture and light, and those are the same qualities being explored in his more recent sculpture and installation work, made largely from found and recycled wood. The working processes of repetition and intuitive intervention are common to both.
