Claire Coles

Claire Coles studied Applied Art at Middlesex University where she experimented with stitching techniques applied to non-textile materials such as wallpaper and ceramics. Delicately sewing together intricate layers of wallpaper and fabric using machine and hand-embroidery techniques she makes pictures that are contemporary but with a nostalgic edge. Incorporating leather, felt and gems into the design the image appears to grow and come to life. Similarly, the apparent erosion of the porcelain surfaces of her ceramics which often incorporate lace doilies and hand stitching into the forms we have the impression of time passing giving the work an ethereal and poignant quality.
