Erin Burns graduated with an MFA from New York University in 1997. After several successful shows in her native San Francisco where she is also represented by the Andrea Schwartz Gallery, she moved to the UK and completed a one year residency at the Florence Trust Studios in Highbury, North London.
Burns began this latest series of work by photographing the environs of her new surroundings, documenting images of flowers, spring buds and foliage. She is interested in catching quiet moments of natural beauty, but the images are then subjugated with mark making. Creating moments in time that reflect a melancholic attachment to the organic world, she investigates the formal qualities of painting utilising a process of layering various mediums including paint, marker pen and viscous resin polymer. A process that is both additive and subtractive develops into an exploration of the relationships created through the juxtaposition of shape, texture and imagery as they converge and float on top of one another.
