Karoline Bröckel

"Perhaps you see clouds in the sky float past, or perhaps birds in flight. You absorb images that change from one moment to the next. The wing beat that was just in the present is now already past - and the next one, so recently in the future, has become the present: the future and the past obviously collide in the blink of an eye, touching on the fine line that we call the present."

Stefan Klein, The Secret Pulse of Time

Karoline Bröckel draws moments in time. Spending most of her time outside with a paper and pencil she studies the swallows following their flight path, watches snowflakes floating, branches of a birch tree moving in the wind while her hand guides the pencil. This requires an intensely quiet concentration.

There is nothing arbitrary in these drawings, instead there is a precise intelligence contained within these journeying lines, translating with faithful correspondence, in a similar way to an electrocardiogram accurately depicting the activity in the heart – a precise visual connection, amplified through the pencil’s tip – a translation of information from one dimension to another.

These re-visions of often common place events that we take for granted, invite us to a look afresh at events within the landscape as they unfold before our eyes.
