Pete Hoida

Pete Hoida was born in the industrial surroundings of Birkenhead. Having studied landscape architecture for some years he returned to his passion for art, studying at Goldsmiths under Albert Irvin and Sean Scully and pursuing his own creative vision for forty years with little regard for changing tastes and styles during that time. He has painted in his rural Gloucestershire studio since 1974.

Hoida creates vast, radiant works. His broad brushtrokes are applied to expansive, horizontal canvases, confidently juxtaposing light, colour and tone. His compositions develop organically from the interaction of swathes of intense colour; purplish blacks and blues converge with deep carmine reds, baby blues and ochres. The depth of paint varies in one painting between viscous impasto to thin washes more akin to watercolour, barely covering the surface. The use of textured blocks suggest a veiled reference to both the industrial and natural landscapes that Hoida has experienced. In addition we feel that here is an artist that delights in a sophisticated and brave palette, the scale and vibrancy of the paintings having a sustained impact on the viewer long after they have been seen.
