The works of Robin Horsch reflect his deep-rooted connection with nature and landscape. Throughout his artistic career he has incorporated both painting and sculpture in his artistic practice. The dark shadowy figures depicted in some of his 2-D work have found new expression as wooden sculptures.
Branches of oak lying abandoned in the forests in Northern Germany suggest themselves to Horsch as anthropomorphic figures. Carefully carving each unique piece of wood by following the inherent twists and turns of growth the slim upright forms gradually emerge into being. The apparent roughness and violence of the chainsaw used as the tool to cut the initial abstract shape is seemingly at odds with the delicate and ephemeral nature of the figures created. These are not human representations but are more reminiscent of the forms present in primeaval/ancient cultures of Africa and Polynesia.
In our increasingly urbanised world these sculptures made from found pieces of wood demonstrate in their creation and in their material both a fragility and strength reminding the viewer of the inextricable and delicate balance between nature and our civilisation.
