Sotis Filippides originally graduated from the Athens School of Ceramics and then moved to the UK primarily to learn English. However, he soon began to research the clay in this country and discovered that an unusual type of clay exists here which is very rough and textured with sand particles but yet is exceptionally malleable. This means that Sotis is able to produce work that appears heavy but is actually very delicate and lightweight.
His shapes are simple and organic and he likes to combine exteriors in dark earthy shades contrasting with lighter sky-blues and chalky whites of the interiors. All his work is hand thrown and he takes his inspiration from the landscape such as the bark of trees or volcanic rock. He regularly works to commission supplying pieces to The Conran Shop, Libertys and David Linley as well as a number of galleries in the UK.
